Andermatt and Novonesis join hands to launch Cell-Tech® for soy farmers in Africa.

Demeter Ghana serves Ghanaian farmers.

“We believe in helping farmers grow more with less. This means supporting farmers with the knowledge, data, and appropriate inputs to maximise their return on investment”.

During a recent trip to Ghana, Patrick Meyer, Andermatt Head of International Market Development visited pineapple producers, banana plantations and greenhouse growers cultivating chili peppers, cucumbers and ornamentals.

Ghana is the second largest pineapple producer in Africa, producing over 660 000 tons annually. In 2021, Ghana exported $29 million worth of fresh and dried pineapples, with nearly 85.8% of these exports going to the EU market.

Despite their success, Ghanaian pineapple farmers face significant challenges, including pests such as mealybugs and Phytophthora. In a country where several established existing solutions have been banned, growers are urgently looking for new alternatives. Similar production challenges were evident across all the growers visited.

Large-scale banana plantations face challenges with stem borers, mealybugs, and black Sigatoka. Key pests that are problematic in the production of greenhouse vegetable crops include Ralstonia bacterial root rot, whiteflies, thrips, and other sucking insects, whereas ornamental growers continue to source reliable, effective solutions to thrips, mealybug and Pythium disease.

Demeter Ghana currently distributes two Andermatt microbial solutions:

A fungal inoculant (Trichoderma asperellum) for the control of plant root diseases and for enhanced plant growth on all crops, including; rice, maize and soybean.

A concentrated wettable powder formulation of the entomopathogenic fungus, Beauveria bassiana which infects and kills various agricultural insect and mite pests.
